The World From Your Window
For some, they see what they want to see and they listen to what they want to.
This is called as "scotomisation" - mentioned in The Da Vinci Code by Sir Leigh - a psychological tendency in people to see what they want to see and not see what they don't want to see - in situations, in themselves, in anything, even in a painting - due to the psychological impact that seeing (or not seeing) would inflict.
Thus, people can see the same thing differently.

Given to you is a situation where all we can see is through our little window (you can have bigger window if you want), or windows. Clearly, you can't see anything through your wall. While you can see everything that is happening within you window's frame, you'll miss everything behind the wall. Right?
Same goes to a video clip, a video that has been trimmed. Anything filmed before and after the clip, we don't have any idea of it.
It is undeniable that when we get to know somebody in 2017, we don't know what he has been through in 1989 (throwing random date here). We might have a glimpse of his life, but never the whole things in details. Therefore, it is inappropriate to judge people from a little known period. Even if we've known her since his day-1, there are always things we didn't know.
“The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”
― Robertson Davies
This has led to so many misunderstanding between people. For example, in the case of K (refer my previous entry), he/she had a history of being short and hot-tempered. People who know his/her history will have difficulties in dissociating K from his/her bad image of having such temper. So whenever K said something or sent some text messages, his/her message tend to be misinterpreted.
“People see what they want to see and what people want to see never has anything to do with the truth.” - Roberto Bolaño
For some reason, I agree with the quote above. Why?
“Everyone looks retarded once you set your mind to it.”
― David Sedaris
Once you set how you are going to perceive the world, the world will look like what you want it to be. Unlike a quote "seeing is believing, but not always", normally people do wanna believe solely from what they see. Ignoring all other possibilities.
P/s : This is a pessimist side of me. One side that has been hurt so many times from judgmental people, those who stomped me whenever they got some spare time. haha. Here, I give you my counter-attack :
“A European says: I can't understand this, what's wrong with me? An American says: I can't understand this, what's wrong with him?
I make no suggestion that one side or other is right, but observation over many years leads me to believe it is true.”
― Terry Pratchett
And one more,
“Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.”
― Arthur Schopenhauer
